When Should You Open Your Pool?
Spring is one of the most exciting times for pool owners because it means the start of another swimming season is just around the corner! What many pool owners don’t realize is how important the timing of your pool opening is to the start of your swimming season. In this article, we will review what factors go into determining the right time to open your pool. But first, why does timing matter at all?
Why Timing Matters More Than You Think
So what’s wrong with simply opening your pool when you’ve got a free weekend?
Opening your pool early can result in some additional expenses as you’ll need to start treating the water and running the pump to keep the water clean and clear; however, operating a pool with low water temperatures requires less chemical and electrical cost.
On the other hand, opening too late can result in green or cloudy water. This can delay your swimming season by several weeks as you work to clear the water; while also costing you additional money in chemicals and time cleaning the pool.
Key Factors That Determine When to Open Your Pool
So how can you tell when to open your pool? Here’s a few of the key factors.
1) Outdoor Temperature
Consistent daytime temperatures are one of the clearest indicators that it’s time to open your pool. It’s not about a single warm day; it’s about a consistent pattern of warming weather. When temperatures regularly reach 15–20°C, conditions are generally suitable for opening.
2) Water Temperature
Outdoor temperatures are an easy way of keeping tabs on when you should open your pool, but the temperature of the pool water is the real gauge. This is because algae tends to thrive once water temperatures rise above 15°C (~60°F). Opening when (or slightly before) your pool water maintains 15 degrees will help you prevent algae blooms, which will reduce the amount of chemicals and time needed to get your pool going.
3) Surrounding Trees and Debris
Your property can have an influence on the timing of your pool opening. If your yard has trees that shed leaves, buds, or pollen in the spring, timing becomes even more important.
Opening your pool before this organic debris starts falling in the pool can again help to prevent algae buildup; reducing the strain on your filtration system and helping to improve water clarity in the early part of the pool season.
4) Equipment Check and Maintenance Needs
Before opening your pool, it can be a good idea to check all of your pool’s equipment and components; especially things like the pump, filter, and liner. If these require maintenance you may want to open the pool a little earlier than you might normally. Waiting to do key maintenance tasks like liner replacements can really eat into your swimming season so it’s good to check early so you can book the service as soon as you can.
So When Should You Open Your Pool?
In Ontario, most homeowners open their pools between late April and mid-May. The exact timing, as we’ve seen, will depend on what the early spring weather brings. The warmer the weather, the earlier you should open the pool.
Opening earlier in the year can offer significant benefits, especially when it comes to preventing algae growth and reducing cleanup time. Waiting too long, on the other hand, can create additional work and delay your ability to fully enjoy your pool in the early weeks of the already short Canadian swimming season.
In general, if you’re not fully sure when to open your pool, open it a little earlier than you might otherwise. The additional cost of sanitizing chemicals and running the pool pump for another week or two will be nothing compared to the time and expense of trying to clear an algae-filled pool if you wait.
Wrapping Up
Many pool owners simply open their pools when they’re ready to start swimming. While this seems like a logical approach, it can actually cause quite a headache. By considering factors like temperature, debris, water conditions, and equipment readiness, you can make a smart decision that sets you up for a clean, enjoyable, and stress-free season.
When in doubt, it’s usually better to open a little early than a little late. Your future self will thank you!
